Game on San Antonio!


Last night I limped back to the podiatrist, bone scan CD in hand, and begged the man to tell me what was wrong with my foot. He looked at my x-rays; he looked at my bone scan and declared me fracture free. I’ve got bursitis and he told me he would give me a shot of cortisone and then I needed to come back in two weeks to check it out. I’m not really sure what bursitis is, and quite frankly, I don’t care, just fix it and tell me how to prevent it and I’ll be on my way. Apparently it is some sort of inflammation of the bursa sack and I just need to wear my metatarsal pad, my Superfeet, and ice my foot down after every run and I should be able to prevent it from coming back. Then he said, and I QUOTE: “You can get back to running once the swelling has gone down. Have fun at your marathon.” I could have kissed the man; I clapped my hands and whooped in joy until he told me that the shot would hurt. When I asked him how bad, he looked at me and said “really bad”. I told him as long as it worked; I’m down with it….BRING IT. And by damned he was right, that was one hell of a painful shot. My foot was numb for about an hour and it was very painful for awhile, but he said that I should feel a big difference in a couple of days.

I woke up this morning and stepped gingerly out of bed. I didn’t feel the lump. I stepped again, something was there, but it was definitely smaller. I started prancing around and visions of running filled my head. I can’t wait to get back to my real training and get off the elliptical. Since I haven’t been running for about a month now, I will need to start back slowly and I’m sure that I will have to re-think my marathon goal time, but none of that matters. What matters is that I WILL BE IN SAN ANTONIO ON NOVEMBER 15TH TO RUN MY VERY 1ST MARATON!!! My co-workers were very happy for me this morning and said that there had been no doubts in their minds that I would be there. They said that I would have been there even if I had to do the damn thing on crutches….and they are probably right.

In other news, my daughter’s best friend from Missouri has been with us all week. I love Drew, I have known her since they were young and she is like my second daughter. I really enjoy her visits. Sunday, we all went to Colorado Springs for the day, and Rick and I took them to the zoo. The outing was really fun, even though the weather was kind of crappy. The girls have had a great time together and even hopped on the light rail train yesterday to go meet Rick downtown for lunch. They got their free meal and then spent the rest of the day shopping.

I am Hot. I mean....lovely.



Look what I've got. An award! I don't get too many awards, so I had to go ahead and gloat. The last award that I recieved was for some online compliance training from work that I received last spring. I've got a certificate and everything! What? That's not an award you say? Oh....

I'm Just Not That Normal.

The other day Rick and I were in the middle of throwing our second load of workout clothes into the wash for the week and he turns to me and says “You know, one of these weeks, we should just be like normal people and go hang out on a patio somewhere and drink beer and try new restaurants and just hang out” I quickly looked up at the mention of beer and turned to him and said “I like beer; I’ll go hang out with you”. Then I looked at my surroundings. Running shorts, bike shorts, helmets, Garmin forerunner, running shoes, bike shoes and gels were strung out anywhere and everywhere as far as the eye could see. I had just gotten back from a long “run” so there was an empty gel packet stuck to the counter and the dog had my heart rate monitor in her mouth and was walking around in circles.
“You don’t call this normal?” I inquired.
“Well…you know, I just think maybe one of these weeks we should just relax and maybe go try out some new restaurants or something. Maybe drive over to Fort Collins and go to the brewery or eat at Rasta Pasta.”
My ears perked up at the mention of Fort Collins. I had my sights on the Fort Collins marathon as my spring marathon and I had a well thought out plan on how I would train for it. My plan was to have Rick drop me off somewhere along the marathon route in the canyon and I would run the 15-20 miles back into town and meet him and Madison at one of the shops or restaurants in the downtown area. I made mention of my plan and said that we could hang out and drink beer on a patio after I was done with the run. “I would LOVE to do that!” I enthusiastically said. The look on his face made me believe that he didn’t quite think that I was getting what he meant by “normal”. What? Like getting dropped off somewhere in a canyon and running 20 miles back into town isn’t normal?
“But I like to workout”. I said.
He agreed that he liked to workout too, but it got me to thinking that while people who run or bike on a daily basis may not be in the majority, I’m not sure why these activities shouldn’t be considered out of the norm? It’s my normal, so does that make me “not normal”? And if I’m not normal, what does that make people who train for an Ironman? I probably overanalyze things too damn much, which I’m sure just isn’t normal.

Tomorrow I have a 45 minute run. Wednesday a bike and then taking it easy the rest of the week. Our Copper Triangle road bike ride is on Saturday.

Climbing Mt Evans for the old man's BD




Today was Rick's 40th Birthday. We woke up, drank coffee, watched the tour, and I taunted him with old fart jokes. I no longer think of 40 as being old, but I am younger then him so I can make old fart jokes. I'm evil, that's how I roll. As the tour ended with one of the toughest climbs of the whole tour, I turned to him and commented that we needed to do some climbing on our road bikes today. He agreed and we decided that a climb up Mount Evans would be a memorable thing to do on his 40th birthday. We didn't really have much planned for the day. I had tried to plan an outing in the mountains with some of his friends, but the plans had fallen through. Most of our friends live out of town and had just been out here for our wedding in March and his other friend had knocked up his wife and she was due any day, so there would be no big 40th parites. Since I knew no one could come out for his 40th, I did his main birthday gift while everyone was here for our wedding. I hired his favorite band from back in his college days to come give a private concert for him and his friends. It was a great night and everyone loved it. I wish that I could have made it happen on his actual birthday, but that's ok.

We didn't get out to Mount Evans until around 1:00 and we knew that we were in danger of the afternoon mountain thunderstorms, but we were going to ride no matter what. The ride starts at the top up near Echo Lake at about 10,600 ft and ascends 4,000 feet over 14 miles. It was going to be a tough ride. The rain started as we pulled into the parking lot up near the picnic grounds at Echo Lake. We looked at each other, shrugged, and got on our bikes. The sun was still shining and we had our rain gear, so no worries. We paid the three dollar per person and started up the climb. I was sweating and breathing hard after only a mile. The thin air was killing me and even Rick had slowed down to a noticeable crawl. We stopped and I stuffed my rain jacket into Rick's back pack. Then I peeled off my sweaty bike tights. Much better. I ALWAYS overdress and we all know how much of an "efficient" sweater I am (or according to Jamoosh! , I don't sweat-I glow). The drive up Mt Evans is a very popular Saturday afternoon thing to do, so we had to contend with many, many cars as well as the rain. There are certain places on the road where it is a shear drop off with no gaurd rail and the fear factor was definitely playing with my mind....I tried not to look. After only about 3.5 miles up, the dark clouds rolled in and the thunder and lightning started. DAMN IT!! The weather kicked us off the mountain and we only made it a seven mile round trip instead of 28 miles. So Mount Evans is still ours for the conquer. We WILL be back!

While we were gone, Madison had made Rick a birthday cake. I had tried to convince her to wait until I was back, but she insisted the she do it herself. She has taken quite an interest in baking these days. She likes to make cakes, cookies, muffins, etc. The birthday cake read: Happy 40th Birthday Old Man. Way to go Maddie! The cake was great. We took Rick out to dinner (I enjoyed my favorite milk stout beer...ummmm) and then came home for some very yummy cake. I did notice that someone had changed the wording on the cake from Happy Birthday old man to Happy Birthday Hot Buns. I can't imagine who would have done that.

The Gym...a great hookup place?

Tuesday, I went and did my elliptical duty at the gym for an hour. As usual, I won’t bore you with the details, but I managed to slog through 7 sweaty miles on the machine. I passed the time by watching the chick beside me trying to pick up guys. I first became aware of her because of the extreme perfume that was coming from my right side; I turned to look at her and had to do a double take. She had this huge smile plastered on her face and she was nodding at every dude that went by. I at first thought that she was just retarded (I mean, who smiles like that while they are working out) until I saw what she was wearing (plus the stinky perfume). You could actually see her Victoria’s Secret push up bra - and I know what these look like; I own plenty - through her low cut tank and she was working it in a very short skirt and hoop earrings. Hoop earrings? I kept glancing over at her, very entertained by what I saw. I really hope that she didn’t think that I was interested. She really wasn’t very attractive, but I couldn’t keep from looking at that huge fake grin and wide eager eyes. It was like a train wreck, I couldn’t help myself. She kept eagerly glancing left and right to see if anyone was interested. No one was biting so she finally went and jumped on a stationary bike that was located behind closer to the weight machines. I did the ole neck crane a couple of times, but after nearly falling off my machine I stopped trying to look. Bored and without any entertainment, I finally stopped.

I guess the gym is a great place to pick up the opposite sex if you were looking. I go there in a hat, no makeup, and in whatever Nike shorts that happen to fall out of my closet at the time. No one would want me anyway due to the extreme “efficient” sweating that I do. I’m pretty gross; it’s a good thing that I’m married and not looking. I wonder how many hookups actually happen there. The people aspect is the most interesting part of going to the gym. As soon as I can run again, I’m dropping my membership.

Wednesday, I did a 45 minute bike ride on my indoor trainer. Again…another exciting indoor workout. I would have taken the bike outside, but I was tired and just didn’t feel like it. I kept my cadence up above 100 for awhile and then 90 and just tried to do a fast spin. What I really wanted to do was run. I did my bone scan this week and still don’t have any results yet. My foot still hurts no matter what I do, so I figured that I’m damned if I do and I’m damned it I don’t, so I’m going to go on a test run dammit. I threw my running shoes on and hit the door. It felt great to get out for a short run, but I’m paying for it today. I’m barely hobbling around, but I was hobbling before the run, so whatever.

Tonight is another elliptical “run”. I hope there are some interesting people at the gym to help me get through the workout.

Rest Day....well...maybe a little Yoga too.


Today is rest day. I'm supposed to enjoy a complete day of rest and relaxation with no training. So I came home from work and fixed a quick dinner of chicken quesedillas and popped open one of our home brews (an Anchor steam knock off...yum) and tried to relax. For some reason, I couldn't do it; I didn't sleep very well last night, so I'm not sure what the problem was. I decided to go ahead and grab a mat and do some yoga. I haven't done any yoga in a few weeks, so it felt really good to stretch my muscles out. I did several sets of downdog, into plank, followed by up dog, and finally child's pose. I threw in some warrior I and II poses, but for the most part, I kept it to some light easy stretches. Yoga works like magic and is particularly good for runners (or people who have to run on the elliptical because of their F*@#ing feet). Whether it was the yoga or the beer (or both), I think I will sleep well tonight.

I think I am a little on the nervous side because I think the time has come for me to decide about my fall marathon....San Antonio. Do I go ahead and continue to train for it or do I run the half instead of the full or do I just cancel the trip altogether. I guess I will wait and see what the foot diagnosis is before I make a decision, but I am starting to get a little nervous of what I will hear. I guess I just need to listen to my body and take care of my health. There will always be another marathon if I don't make this one.

Training and a Movie




Saturday was X-Training day and I had a 2 hour bike ride on my schedule. Rick and I decided to leave the road bikes in their home in the garage and pull out the mountain bikes. It has been awhile since we had biked at Lair ‘O” the Bear open space park, so we decided that should be our destination. We got out there fairly early, around 8:00 and the lot was already filling up fast. This is a popular spot with hikers, runners, and bikers because it is so close to Denver, so we are used to seeing many people on the trail. The temperature was supposed to reach 90 degrees plus on Saturday, so everyone was out enjoying the cool morning temps. I love this trail, the climb up is only about a mile and a half and then there are some roller coaster downhills that are a blast, a couple of other shorter climbs, then all downhill back. I am also happy to report that it must have been chick day on the trail. The ratio of female to male riders was at least 3:1, which is extremely unusual. Usually, you might see one female rider, but the vast majority are males. Not today though, us girls were taking over the trails! I rode with one group for a little while and it was nice to have female company while riding.

I had a little trouble on the first uphill, which was taken care of by a couple of puffs from my inhaler and I was riding technically strong on the downhills. What a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Saturday afternoon was deemed “mommy and daughter” time. We were on a mission to see the new Harry Potter flick. I’m not a big fan of watching movies; I have a hard time sitting though the whole thing, but it has been a tradition for Madison and me to see the Harry Potter movies together. We have been seeing these together since the first one came out back in 2001 (I think). Plus I just absolutely love kid’s movies; I think that they are the best. There are so many movies out there that you wonder what the hell they were thinking when they made them. Then you wonder who the hell is watching these movies and why. Then you hear how popular the movies are and wonder how Americans have gotten so dumb. Anyway…I digress….Madison and I went out to lunch at Panera and then on to the show. Because Madison is fourteen, I have been deemed unworthy to go to with her to her usual movie theater in fear that someone might see her with her very uncool mother (even though I made sure I was not dressed in my normal “slacker” attire), so we had to drive all the way over to Aurora to see the show.

The movie itself was pretty good. The kids are growing up and coming of age, so the show had a little more emphasis on the characters, which I liked. There was also a lot more humor in this one and it wasn’t nearly as dark of a movie. I thought the end kind of left you hanging a little bit, but all and all, it was a pretty good show.

Sunday, I was supposed to get a “run” in on the elliptical. Yes, it was as boring as it sounds and I can’t wait to get back to regular running. I saw a lot of runners on the trails on Saturday and I was really jealous. I went back to the doctor Friday morning and took more x-rays. No signs of a stress fracture (Yeah!), but they were baffled by my swollen foot and couldn’t figure out why I was in pain. I have a bone scan scheduled at the hospital this week to further check it out. Eeek!

Anyway, I got a little over nine miles in on the elliptical and watched the Tour de France while I was “running”.

Run for Congo Women 5K




I downloaded and filled out the forms this morning for the Run for Congo Women 5K over in Morrison, Colorado. This is a 5K/10K Trail run/hike to benefit Women for Women Internationals' Congo Program. The story behind this is that 5.4 Million people have died over the last 10 years and over 250,000 women and girls have been raped. I thought it was a great cause and of course I absolutely love a good trail run, so I decided to sign up. I know that I have posted before about how I hate to run 5K’s, but I figure I can suffer through one run in order to support the cause, plus it is no where near the suffering that these women have gone through over in Africa. I can quit being a pansy and balls up for one 5K. Of course, we will just have to see how my little ole foot is feeling by then. I go back to the doctor tomorrow morning to get it inspected again, this time by a different doctor. ELF has already warned me that it might be a stress fracture and has instructed me not to feel like it’s the end of the world; 6-12 weeks of non weight bearing activity and I’ll be back to running in no time. The good news is that I will probably still be able to cycle. If my foot continues to give me issues and I won’t be able to actually run the 5K, I can always hike the trail.

Training for the week has been an hour road ride on Tuesday morning with Rick and an hour “run” on the elliptical last night. After the elliptical it was crunches and push ups. Tonight will be functional strength training.

The Life Laws

Yesterday was rest day. I covet these days. There's no running, no biking, no weight lifting, and not even one damn sit up on my schedule. Yes, just a complete day of rest.

Last night I came home from work, grabbed a Blue Paddle beer, and hung out with Madison for a little while. When Madison got bored with me and I had drained the last drop of beer, I decided to do something productive and organize some files. While digging around in our file cabinets to see what the hell I had saved in there, I found a printout of the “Life Laws” that I had printed out back in 2002. I heard about them from an Oprah show (now, I don’t want to hear any razzing about me watching Oprah) where Dr. Phil was a guest speaker. The Life Laws are really about our relationships and how we deal with them, but I think that we can use them in our everyday life as well. However you would like to view them, they meant something to me. I hope they can mean something to you as well.

The Life Laws…and what they mean.

1. You create your own experience
Whether life treats you fairly or unfairly, you will always be in control of your reaction to it, and that determines where you come out. What you fear you create. If you decide you're going to continue the cycle, you will continue the cycle.

2. There is no reality, only perception
We all view the world through filters, many of them, distorted. Some of them may be destroying your life. If you view the world through a dark, distorted filter, your world is going to be a dark, distorted place. If you perceive yourself as weak and vulnerable, you will be.

3. You can't change what you won't acknowledge
Be truthful about what isn't working and stop making excuses. You've got to face it to replace it. Your blind spots may be the very things you most need to see.

4. Life is managed, not cured. No one "solves" life. There's no way to "fix" it permanently. nobody arrives at a place where the work is done. The best any of us can do is manage it through the ups and downs, joys and disappointments. You're a life manager, and you are your only client. Are you going to manage yourself into a place of happiness and accomplishment, or a place of sadness and disappointment?

5. We teach people how to treat us
Its meaning is simple: What you've accepted from people in the past is the clearest indicator to them of how they can treat you in the future.

6. People do what works
Even the most destructive behaviors have a pay-off, Otherwise, we wouldn't engage in them. What behaviors are dragging you down? Figure them out or you're like a puppet on a string.

7. There is power in forgiveness
Forgiveness frees you. And the person you're forgiving doesn't have to acknowledge they're wrong or apologize. Don't forgive someone to make them feel better. Do it to make yourself feel better.

8. You have to name it to claim it. Get clear about what you want and stake your claim.

9. Life rewards action
Think of the 5-10 most important people in our lives, and tell them how we feel about them. "You shouldn't let the sun set on another day with something unsaid to the people you love."

10. You either get it or you don't
That means you either understand that YOU are your top priority or... you don't

Rinse and Repeat

Yea, yea…I know, every weekend I post about the same thing. My long run on Saturday and a long ride on Sunday. Well…you’re getting it again.




Saturday, I was supposed to do a twelve mile run, but because of my bone bruise, I had to do it on the elliptical so that I wouldn’t cause a stress fracture. I had been psyching myself up for 2 days for a 12 mile run on the elliptical. I wasn’t looking forward to it…BORING….but I was going to do it. Then I checked my schedule and was appalled that the 12 mile run was gone! I immediately e-mailed Liz and asked her where it went. She replied that while she liked my enthusiasm, she didn’t think putting my body through something that it wasn’t used to for that long of a time would not be beneficial. Ok, good to know. I personally think that the elliptical is rather easy and I’m worried that I will lose some of my running fitness, but I will do what the good woman tells me to. The only good thing out of this no running mess is that my weight is back down. I haven’t run in over a week and I am back down to around 117-118. Apparently biking and the elliptical do not make me fat; only running.

I arrived at the gym, sort of relieved that it would only be an hour on the elliptical. I noticed a dude standing outside the gym smoking. He was an employee; I would have thought it really odd if he had workout clothes on and was outside taking a smoke break in between weight sets. I rushed in to snag an elliptical machine, but the place was dead, so I didn’t have to worry. I climbed on and went to town. The Tour de France was on, so I was hoping that the time would go fast. After awhile, I began my 10 x 1 minutes as a fast “run” and I started to sweat profusely. Now, I am not just a sweater, I am salty sweater and I sweat a lot. I like to view myself as an “efficient sweater”. Pretty soon, my arms and legs were just gross and the machine was bathed in sweat. I noticed that the guy to my left kept glancing over at me. I’m pretty sure that he was grossed out at the sweat that was running down the machine. Although I hoped that I wasn’t flinging sweat on him...it could’ve happened. I finished up my 7.50 miles and jumped off to go find something to clean the machine up with. I looked down at the floor; I was going to need a mop for that mess. I cleaned up as best as I could and got the hell out of there. I keep expecting a letter in the mail asking me not to come back.

Sunday Rick and I had a three to four hour bike ride planned. The Copper Triangle is just three weeks away! It will be a beautiful ride and I’m really excited. We parked off of Kipling and rode the C470 trail to Morrison and into the foothills. We climbed up the Red Rocks road and ended up at the top by the amphitheater. There were beautiful views from the top and I wished that I had brought the camera. I could describe it to you, but it definitely won’t give it justice. I love seeing the huge jutting red rocks against the mountain background. It was breathtaking. We did a little more climbing and then headed back, which was easy because it was pretty much all downhill from there. That’s such a great feeling.

It was a great weekend. I can’t wait to get back to running though. I saw many runners on the trail and I was sad that I was getting to run that weekend. Funny that I don’t feel that way about biking. Lot’s of fun things on my training schedule this week and then rinse and repeat for the weekend.

At lunch yesterday, I was on a mission. I am substituting the elliptical machine for all of my runs until my foot feels better, so I had to find a gym to sign with. I hate gyms; they are always too hot and filled with WAY too much testosterone. And they smell bad. I may be a little prejudice though because the last gym that I was a member of was Gold’s. Gold’s was a hotbed for testosterone…and sweat….and horrible grunting. The grunting alone would scare me away from the weight room; if it hurt that bad, I wanted to no part of it. I was also always scared of the puddles of sweat that were left on the equipment. At least I hope it was sweat, the way some of those people were straining, well…who knows.

I had done a little research online the day before, so I knew which gym I wanted to check out. It was an easy drive from my house and had low rates that could be paid on a monthly basis. I walked in and the first thing that I noticed was the absence of oversized men with weight belts. The place had huge windows throughout the whole building and was very light and airy. Ok, I thought, so far, so good. I was greeted by a friendly employee who was not pushy in the least. She gave me a tour and I noticed about 20 elliptical machines. I decided to go ahead and sign up for a trial membership. On a spur of the moment decision, I decided to sign my daughter up for a trial membership as well. She’s not the least bit interested in working out, but I keep trying. Sometimes I think that my real child was switched at birth, we are such polar opposites.

On my way home from work that evening, I called Madison and let her know about our new gym memberships and that I was coming home to change. I told that if she wanted to go, she needed to get changed. I expected a negative response from her, but was pleasantly surprised when she said that she wanted to go! I knew that no one would believe it, so I took a picture of us in our workout clothes as proof. She wouldn’t let me bring the camera to the gym to get her in action…she told me that would be lame. We were getting ready to leave, when she realized that she didn’t have any shoes or socks on. Beginner mistake. Of course, all she owns are flip flops and converse, she choose the latter, thinking it would be a better choice. Good thinking.

I was very proud of her at the gym. She was on the elliptical right next to mine and I could tell that she was struggling. I asked her how she was doing and she said her goal was to make it for fifteen minutes. I had a short “run” and then half an hour with functional strength training, so after she was done with the elliptical, she explored for a bit and then I saw her walking on the treadmill as I finished up. I hope that I can get her to go again!

Spark?

Thank you for all of your kind comments on my bout of whining yesterday. I appreciate the fact that you attended my pity party; I promise that there won’t be anymore whining for awhile. I was driving home from work last night and I saw a guy in a wheelchair and on the back of his wheelchair was a sign that said “veteran”. I’ve seen this guy before, at least once or twice every other week, so he must live somewhere nearby. His legs end in stumps about mid thigh and I’ve often wondered what happened to him and what the story was behind his life. When I spotted him; I just felt like a big loser. Here I was complaining about wanting fresh legs on my workouts and griping about my horrible (when it’s really not THAT bad) pace, when I should really just be thankful that I am able to do these things and that I am healthy. What a big fat pansy I am.

My coach and I have decided that I should take at least 1-2 weeks off of running so my foot will heal. In fact, we have been e-mailing each other about this issue off and on all day. Lucky her! I’m sure she is overjoyed to talk about my feet all day long. We talked about doing the elliptical and deep water running in order to get my “run” in and then still use cycling to cross train. Deep water running - sounds a tad bit more exciting then the treadmill, but I have to be in a swimsuit, don’t know about that one. I’m not sure that I like the idea of being off for up to two weeks, but it is what it is and I’ll do what I have to do in order to get back on my feet. No pun intended.

Anyway, I had a great bike ride this morning. The weather has been very cool still in the mornings, around 57 degrees, so I got dressed in my tights and light jacket and hit the road. I got in a little over 20 miles before I had to go back and get ready for work. I’m not sure what the rest of the week will bring. Tomorrow was suppose to be a short run, Thursday track day, Saturday a 12 mile run, and then Sunday a 3-4 hour bike, but I’m sure we will juggle the schedule around a little to accommodate my poor little bruised bone. I hope I don’t have to do a 12 mile run in the water. I wonder how long that would take….

I just need a quick pity party.......

What do you do, when you are not where you want to be in your training? I did my run test on Saturday. These tests are never easy and I quite honestly do not like to do them, but they give my coach a good feel for where I’m at in my training. My results were ok; I ran the same pace as the last test in April, yet I did it with a lower heart rate, which means that I am improving. I also ran this test at a very steady rate instead of holding a quick pace and then dropping the pace down to rest and then back up again. The fact that I did the whole run at a steady even pace shows that I am doing well. The rate at which my heart rate dropped has been steadily improving over time and this current test came back showing that I am very fit. The one thing that bothers me is my pace. I averaged the test at about a 7:50 pace, but that is a lot slower then what I used to be able to run a 5K back when I was younger (don’t worry; I won’t go Al Bundy on you). I talked to my coach and let her know that it was a little depressing to be considered fit, yet only be able to pull out a 7:50 pace. Why can’t I get back to where I once was? She brought up my allergies and asthma. I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma last June, but all I have is an inhaler and it is out of date. I’m quite sure the out of date inhaler is doing me good. She was very sympathetic because she was just recently diagnosed with asthma and allergies and was put on all sorts of medication. According to her, it has improved her running immensely. She suggested that I get my lung capacity checked and stated that if my body is fighting, all the training in the world can only do so much. It made sense to me. I tire easily, I am constantly short of breath, and I sound like a freight train coming down the road. You mean there are medications (besides an inhaler out of date inhaler) out there that would help?

I woke up Sunday morning tired and unmotivated. I had an active recovery bike ride on my calendar. How do you get motivated to do something when you are constantly battling your body in order to do it? I read through all of my internet buddies runner’s blogs and it seems like most everyone is fighting something right now. Knee problems, hamstring issues, stress fractures, you name it; I know someone out there who is battling it. Do we really love the sport that much? I'm sure that I'm not the only one to have sat down and reflected on why I do what I do. I am sure that I am not the only one who has struggled to catch a glimpse of the motivation that started this whole training process to begin with. I know that there are good days and there are bad days.

I'm still looking for that spark this week. I got through a half ass recovery ride yesterday with Rick. We took our bikes over to Lookout Mountain and did an easy 5 mile spin up and then the 5 miles back down. As Rick loaded the bikes on the 4-runner he joyfully proclaimed how much he loved climbing. I just stared at him...I wanted to choke him. I just want one bike ride where I'm not coming off of a long run or sprints, I just want one run where I'm not coming off of a 3 hour bike ride where over half is climbing a mountain. I want fresh legs!! I didn't say this to him because I realized how I might have sounded. Whiny...kind of like I am sounding right now. I realize that I am doing this because I love doing this, but I just needed a quick pity party. Thank you if you made it to the end. I hope everyone else has their "spark" this week.

Start the fire!


Well, I guess the fourth of July holiday weekend is officially here. Rick had taken Madison to buy fireworks Tuesday night, so her and a couple of her friends were lighting smoke bombs, sparklers, and anything else they could burn in front of our house last night. You could also hear firecrackers going off in the distance (aren't firecrackers illigal in city limits?) and, of course, every single dog in the neighborhood was barking. Ahhh...the fourth of July...nothing like setting things on fire to celebrate your freedom. :) I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday weekend!

One other thing to note: The Tour De France starts tomorrow. Lance rides again!

Maybe my body won't fall apart after all.

Ok, there's some days that I feel like my body is totally breaking down on me...maybe with the help of these things, I can get it to putter around a few more years.


Superfeet-my feet love them. Don’t worry, this isn’t a full post about my feet, there’s beer on here too. A couple of weeks ago, the foot doctor suggested that I try out the Superfeet premium insoles in order to correct at least some of my feet issues. I bought the green ones with maximum support and I absolutely love them. My bunions have been throwing off my running efficiency and caused that damn bone bruise, so we’ve been trying to find ways to correct the problem without doing the dreaded “S” word (surgery). Since I’ve been running in them, my bone bruise has been healing and I’ve noticed an improvement in my right knee pain and right lower back pain on long runs. It’s so funny how one little damn foot bone can throw off your running form and cause so many problems. Now if they could just make me run faster….especially on that run test on Saturday.

Smartwool-my feet love these too. They are the only socks that I have found that prevent blisters, I absolutely love them. I wore them during my recent half marathon and didn’t get even one blister. I ran in regular socks the other day on my long run (all of my smart wool running socks were dirty from my trip) and boy do I regret it. I have a blister the size of Texas on my left foot. I was going to take a picture, but I didn’t want to gross everyone out. I will never again run in anything besides my smartwools.



Beer-I couldn’t live without it; ok, I could, but why? I tried this New Belgium brew the other day (I’ve been on a New Belgium kick lately) and LOVED it. It’s the 1554 enlightened black ale. Rick wasn’t too keen on it, but that’s ok, more for me. A couple of weeks ago, I posted that the Mighty Arrow beer was my new favorite, but this one is better…I’ll still drink the Mighty Arrow though.
