Wednesday Night Run

Wednesday night I set out to do a short run. The weather was in the 70's and I was feeling pretty good. I ended up doing an eight mile run at 1 hour and 10 minutes. I got home around 6:30 and it was already dark. I hate winter. Can't wait for spring. awhile to wait.

Love of my Life

The other day, Rick was typing up an email to tell his friends about our wedding. I jokingly asked if the words "ball and chain" were included in any of the wording. He laughed and said, "No, I'm telling them that I'm marrying the girl of my dreams". Even though I knew it was a joke, I alos knew he meant it, and it took me back to a time when we were more lenient with our words. When phrases such as "love of my life", "never felt this way about anyone else", and "I've never been so excited about a new relationship" fell easily from our lips. I don't remember when the words turned into comfortable silence and meaningful glances, but I've come to realize that I don't need the words anymore. The way we move through life, in tune with each others thoughts, emotions, and touches, we can tell that we belong together.

I can't wait to marry the love of my life.

Monday Run

I put in a short run on Monday. My goal this week with Madison back in Missouri, is to get in several short runs after work. So Monday, I headed out at about 6:00 to do a little 4 miler. The weather is great this week. It was 60 degrees and it's going to be in the 60's and 70's all week. I love it! I hope it stays like this for a while longer. NO snow! Anyway, I did my 4 miler in a nice easy 36 minutes and came home and pigged out (on healthy stuff of course). I would love to eat a little snack before I go, but since I had that little bout with exercise induced anaphylaxis, I've tried to stay away from food before I run.

Here are a couple of pictures of the trip that we made out to Pine Vally Ranch open space park back in early October. We were on the trail that lead up to the scenic overview and you can tell in the second picture that the dog wasn't too happy about stopping. She likes to move.

Weekend Activities

I had a pretty low key, but very fun, weekend. Friday I got home from work around 5:30 and started on laundry and dinner. Madison was going to Missouri over her fall break, so we had to get her packed for her 7:15 flight on Saturday. Madison already had her laundry sorted by the time I got home, so I threw a load in and put the chicken in the marindade. I cooked Madison's favorite of spicy chicken, red beans and rice, cheesy/garlic bisquits, and corn on the cob. She was happy, fed, and packed by 9:00.

Saturday, I woke up at four in the morning to get in the shower and get the kiddo up by 4:30. We needed to leave by 5:00 and we were dragging butt! Surprisingly, Madison was in a pretty good mood. She's normally a bear in the mornings. I think she was really excited to go back to Missouri to see her grandma and her best friend Drew.

Saturday afternoon, Rick and I went to Lair 'O' the Bear for a Mountain bike ride. I love this trail. It is one of the "easier" mountain bike trails here in the foothills outside of Denver with only a mile and a half climb and then some super fun downhills. It's not very technical and very close to home, so it is usually jam packed with hikers, bikers, and runners. This weekend was no exception, especially with the weather in the 70's.

While I was riding, I decided that I really need a new mountain bike. Rick just bought an 08 Specialized full carbon marathon and he loves it! It's got the brain on the back shocks and says it works great. I'm still riding my 05 Trek Fuel, but you can tell it's starting to fall apart. I just bought my new carbon road bike though, so it might be next year before I can justify splurging on a new mtn bike.

Sunday we decided to explore some new trails. We drove out past Colorado Springs to the Crags Trail Rick was going to hike with the dog and I was going to trail run (of course). The elevation at the trail head was over 9,000 feet and it topped out at over 10,000 feet, so when we got there, we were not surprised to see snow. I was a little disappointed because I would not get a really great run because it was a little slick going uphill, but I was going to try it anyway. This was a beautiful trail. You are running along in the woods and all of a sudden the trail opens up into a meadow and there are some truely outstanding views. Rick took some pictures that I will have to post later. The trail wanders uphill a little farther and then it gets pretty steep. I am pretty much walking at this point due to the ice and the steep hill. It was definitely worth it at the top. We were on on top of the Crags, which is a group of rock pinnacle formations. Again....awesome views! I only managed to get in a 4 mile run at 11:15 pace, but it was worth the trip.

After we got back to the car, we ate lunch and headed out to Cripple Creek to check it out. This is a little gambling town about 30 minutes from Cascade. Cascade, CO is where we are having our wedding, so we figured people could drive out to Cripple to do a little gambling if they wanted.

Wednesday Run

Wednesday I had a "scheduled" 5 mile run on my calendar. I was the one that had put that run there. I kept trying to change my own mind about running the 5 miler all day with "it's too cold outside" or "I'm tired". I kept reminding myself that I was going to run a marathon next year and that it would be to my own benefit if I was to actually get out and run. Besides that, IT WAS ONLY 5 MILES for crying out loud.

I got home around 5:15 and made some chicken fettecine with alfredo sauce and rolls for Madison and Rick and I was out the door by 6:00. I wanted to do an interval run, so I started with a brief warm up (still complaining at myself, of course)and then settled into a nice pace. It was very nice outside, good running weather at 50 degrees. "This isn't so bad" I thought. I hit 3 miles at a 8:23 pace with my best pace being 6:45. The 6:45 pace killed me, who can hold this pace for long periods of time!!!??!! My breath was raging out of control and my pulse was racing, but ahhh, it was only for a short period of time. I hit the 4 mile mark at 35 minutes and the 5 mile at 42.59. What a great night for a run, I'm so glad that I "forced" myself to get out and do it.

Last Week

Since I am suppose to be keeping track of my marathon progress, I guess I should update this dang thing.

Tuesday the 14th-Got in a short 4 mile jog. I didn't get home from work until 6:30, but forced myself to get out and go! Felt very sluggish and tired, like I was getting sick, but finished fairly strong with a nice easy 9.06 mile per minute pace. Sure enough....Wednesday I woke up with a sore throat and achy flu feeling. I knew it! Started the vitamin C, zinc tabs, and cold ease right away.

Thursday the 16th-Still felt pretty under the weather, but the temp was in the 70's, so of course, I couldn't let it pass me by. I was only planning on a 3 mile jog, but ended up running 5 miles. I felt pretty strong by the end of the run with my best pace being 7:15.

Madison had a concert on Friday night, so I elected to cook dinner and drink wine instead of run...imagine that. She went to the Panic of the Disco concert at the Broomfield Event Center. According to her, it was "Amazing"! Her friend's dad took her and her two friends (thank god I didn't have to go), so I cooked baja citris mahi mahi in orange juice, rice, sugar peas, and bread for dinner (plus the Shiraz....yummy). Rick and I enjoyed a great evening of conversation and dinner; that didn't include chicken strips (for once).

Saturday we decided to go mountain biking at Apex park. This is a great trail and it is sooo close to Denver. It has many loops to choose from so that you can make it as short, or as long as you want. My favorite is the Enchanted Forest loop. Most of it is downhill, but there are a few VERY steep climbs that make it really challenging.

Saturday night we grilled steaks and chicken and watched the Mizzou game. That was a waste of time! Guess Chase isn't going to win that Heisman after all!

Sunday I woke up, slapped on my forerunner, and headed out to Deer Creek Canyon for a trail run. I tried to talk Rick into going, but he wanted no part of it (he had taken Friday off and did a 4 hour mountain bike ride...crazy son of a ...bite my tongue). I had ran this same trail last weekend, so I knew what to expect. Climbing and exhaustion. I just wanted to go farther, and faster! I ended up doing a little over 7.5 miles with a 3.5 mile climb. I pushed it and tried not to take any walking breaks on that steep section (couldn't help myself on a couple of occasions), but ended up with a 11:50 pace ('s the mountains!). I would like to try and do better next time, but I'll admit, I was worn out when I was done. I need to take some water with me next time on the run. I think I dehydrated myself on the climb. It was 75 degrees. It felt great to finish and the adrenaline rush was fantastic!

Rick, Madison, and I went to Boulder in the afternoon to shop, eat, and enjoy the weather. What a great day. We went to a few of Madison's shops that she just can't LIVE WITHOUT and bought a few items. We also went into Farfels Farm to purchase a few dog items; cookies, etc Yes....even Rick went. He was become such a Piper lover; although you would NEVER hear him admit it.

Saturday Trail Run

Saturday, Rick convinced me to do a trail run instead of a run on the road, ok... I admit, it didn't take much convincing. I absolutely love being in the woods! I especially love RUNNING in the woods. I always manage to achieve a sense of well being and calmness from the sights, smells, and solitude in my surroundings. I love being the lone person on the trail with just me and my thoughts, just enjoying the peace. Fall is one of my favorite times to trail run. I love crunching through the leaves and feeling the chill in the air.

We went out to Deer Creek Canyon for our run. Rick convinced me to take the dog too (even though she had just gone to the groomers on Wednesday and actually smelled decent). I hadn't done a trail run in awhile, so the thought of the two & a half mile climb left me feeling a little aprehensive. I started out slow, but knew that the first mile was not very steep. I thought that my heart was going to pound out of my chest, but I made it up and felt pretty warmed up and ready to tackle mile two. The second mile is incredibly steep and I knew I would have trouble (the altitude ALWAYS gets me), but I made it up with only a few short stops to catch my breath. The last half a mile evens out a bit...ahhh a breather. After the 2.5 mile climb, the trail flattens out and the run is a little easier. At the 3 mile mark, I turned and came back down.'s all down hill from here! I put in about 6.20 miles. What a great day!


It's official. We've found a place and set a date! My wedding will be March 21st at a rustic little bed and breakfast in the mountains. Check it out.

We rented out the lodge, cottage, and the cabin. It has spectacular views of the mountains, so weather permitting, we will be married on the patio. If there is snow (and there very well could be in March), we will move the ceremony indoors next to the fireplace (under the giant elk head....Jeff will love it). Check in will be Friday the 20th, ceremony on the 21st (and dinner), then check out on Sunday.

We almost rented another place. Sunday we decided to check this one out (I had found it on the internet and thought it looked cool), so we took a drive down there. The drive out was gorgeous with the highway winding through the mountains and the vibrant fall colors. Then we saw the lodge all nested in between some pine trees up in the mountains and I was sold. I'm glad we took the spur of the moment drive and didn't book the other place.

My new Training Partner

I just bought a new Garmin Forerunner 305 to replace my old worn out Garmin 101. I can't wait to use it! I was wanting to get in a 9 mile run tomorrow (to Cherry Creek and back), but Rick suggested a trail run. I'm always up for a trail run, even though the altitude wears me out. We'll see.

Is it the weekend YET!

Not much has been going on lately. I've been extremely busy at work with auditors, month end, quarter end, etc. I haven't had much time to run lately, but I did manage to get in a 6.5 mile jog on Tuesday while Maddie was getting her hair done (she is going through a stage where she changes her hair constantly). We arrived at the salon and our stylist offered me a glass of wine and oh man was it tempting to say "yes, i'll take a glass"! I was a good girl though and changed into my clothes and got my run in. I think that's about it on the running for the week. Not a good start to "Tara's Marathon Training", but I'm hoping to do better next week.

Rick and I managed to get out to Lair 'O' the Bear last Saturday for a two hour mountain bike ride. The weather was perfect for biking. Then on Sunday we packed a lunch, the dog, and Maddie and went out to Pine Valley Ranch park to fish, hike, etc. What a great day. Rick and I took turns hanging out with Madison (while she fished) and throwing a stick into the water for Piper. That dog sure does love the water; she swam until she couldn't hardly walk anymore. Madison finally caught one little fish and then we hiked up to the top of the trail. Gorgeous views up there. I'll have to post some of the pics we took later.

This weekend is supposed to snow. I'n not sure that I'm ready for that yet, but at least I won't feel like I need to constantly be outside and maybe I can get some house cleaning done. We're also going to take a drive out to another bed and breakfast this weekend to see if it would be a place that we could hold the wedding. Our goal is to FINALLY nail down some wedding plans this weekend, so that we can let our families know.
